Artist's Biography:
Vedrana Ascroft was born in Croatia 39 years ago and immigrated to Canada in 1992.
After residing in a number of Canadian cities and towns, she found her special place under the Sun on beautiful Vancouver Island where she lives with her husband and their two young sons.
Art has always been an integral part of her soul’s journey. She has been painting and drawing from a very early age, intuitively learning as she continued to explore different styles, techniques and subject matters.
The life in her adopted country rewarded her with opportunities to follow her heart and pursue her passions. Many years spent traveling through Canada’s glorious landscape and vibrant cities added to the richness of her inner and outer “inspiration well” which has been filling since childhood, always bound to ultimately burst outwards through her brush-strokes on canvas. Etched deepest into her creative subconscious are life’s simple pleasures: colorful still life and rural themes as symbols of sustenance, connection with the land and fruitfulness of human endeavors are just some of the many subject matters explored by this artist. She is equally enchanted by the interplay of light and shadows on a deserted Mediterranean street during afternoon siesta, or anchored wooden boats lullabied by gentle rocking of the waves, as with the green meadows of Quebec’s countryside or sun-baked hills of the Okanagan, blazing autumn colors of Northern Ontario, the majesty of the Rockies reflected in turquoise waters or yellow poppies suspended on a cliff-side above the ocean.
Many artists past and present inspire and influence her work, while she continues to follow her own inner guidance through a dynamic dance between whimsy and realism and slightly animated character of her subjects. Her love of rich and vibrant colors is evident in all her pieces. Acrylics are her chosen medium for fast drying properties and layering ability that adds a desirable dimension of depth.
Vedrana’s hope is that her patrons and viewers will be touched by the joy she feels while creating her pieces.
Her artwork is currently featured at Sooke Harbour House Gallery, 1528 Whiffen Spit Rd. Sooke, British Columbia,V9Z 0T4.
